“The 540 is ideal for somebody who wants a BERNINA 5 Series machine but knows they’re not interested in the extra niceties that come with the 570 QE. Dead simple, dead straightforward.

“For me, having fewer stitches isn’t the deciding factor. What matters is whether you’ll use the additional sewing features. If you don’t want those extras and you want a 5 Series BERNINA, the 540 is a fantastic machine for you.”

More room for the projects you enjoy

The BERNINA 540 provides 8.5 inches of space to the right of the needle, giving you room to arrange garments, quilt sections and larger pieces of fabric.

The slide-on table adds support around the needle area. Whether you’re piecing patchwork or handling a home furnishing project, that space helps you position your work more comfortably.

Keep both hands on your fabric.

The BERNINA Free Hand System lets you raise the presser foot using a knee lever.

That means you can keep your hands on your work while repositioning it. Use it alongside the needle-down setting when turning corners or working around appliqué.

The speed control slider also lets you set a comfortable maximum speed for the task at hand.

Less stopping between seams

The automatic thread cutter trims the threads at the press of a button, making it easier to finish one seam and move on to the next.

A jumbo bobbin holds more thread than a standard bobbin, reducing how often you need to stop and change it. The semi-automatic needle threader also helps you get ready to sew.

These practical conveniences make a difference throughout a sewing session.

Fine-tune your sewing

Adaptive Thread Tension helps maintain balanced stitching, while adjustable presser foot pressure lets you fine-tune how the machine handles your fabric.

Choose and adjust settings using the 4.3-inch colour touchscreen and multifunction knobs. On-screen help is available when you need guidance.

As with any machine, testing your needle, thread and settings on a fabric scrap is a useful first step, particularly when changing materials.

Add your own finishing touches.

With 1,048 stitch patterns, including alphabets, and a maximum stitch width of 9mm, the 540 gives you plenty of scope for decorative details.

Add interest to garment edges, personalise accessories or explore decorative combinations on cushions and quilt projects. Stitch memory lets you save useful settings and combinations for another time.

Add embroidery when you’re ready.

You can enjoy the BERNINA 540 as a sewing and quilting machine without buying an embroidery module.

If your interests develop, you can buy a compatible embroidery module separately. Speak with us about the module and accessories you need for the projects you want to make.

The 540 is also compatible with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator, an optional accessory that helps regulate stitch length during free-motion sewing. The BSR is sold separately.

BERNINA 540 or 570 QE?

Start with the way you sew.

The 540 makes sense if you want the 5 Series working space and are happy without the additional conveniences of the 570 QE.

The 570 QE is worth comparing if features such as built-in BERNINA Dual Feed and the presser foot hover function would make a difference to your sewing. The 540 does not include those features.

Your purchase includes an in-person class at BERNINA HQ to help you get to know your new machine.

Book your class directly with BERNINA. Booking is handled separately from Sewing Direct; contact BERNINA for available dates and arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BERNINA 540 suitable for quilting?

Yes. The working space, slide-on table and knee lifter are useful for patchwork and quilting. You can add the optional BERNINA Stitch Regulator for free-motion work.

Does the BERNINA 540 have a built-in walking foot?

It does not have BERNINA’s built-in Dual Feed system. If you want that feature, speak to us about the 570 QE before deciding.

Is the embroidery module included?

No. The standard sewing-machine package does not include an embroidery module. You can purchase a compatible module separately.

Is the BERNINA Stitch Regulator included?

No. The 540 supports the BSR, but you purchase the accessory separately.

Can I try a machine before deciding?

You can try our demonstration 570 QE to get a feel for the size of the 5 Series. We’ll explain the differences between the models. We do not have a 540 demonstration machine.

How much is delivery?

UK delivery is included in the £2,195 purchase price.

What warranty comes with the machine?

The BERNINA 540 comes with a 7-year warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms. Contact us if you would like to discuss the cover before ordering.

Where does the included class take place?

The included class is held in person at BERNINA HQ and is booked directly with BERNINA, separately from Sewing Direct.
